Uruguay’s flag, which was adopted in 1830, consists of nine alternating white and blue horizontal stripes of equal width – five white (top and bottom) and four blue. A white square with a yellow/gold sun in its center is placed in the upper left hand corner. The “Sun of May” as it is known, is a symbol of freedom and independence and has 16 alternating straight and curvy waves. The nine stripes represent Uruguay’s nine provinces.
