North Korea’s flag is made up of a red background flanked at the top and bottom by equally sized horizontal blue stripes. The inner side of each blue stripe is bordered by a thin white line. Charged on the red field, and just left of center, is a red five point star backed by a white circle. The red of the flag, which was adopted in 1948, is representative of communism and revolutionary patriotism – while the blue symbolizes sovereignty.
